Photographer Dave Mead takes an almost anthropological approach with his extensive portrait series Magnificent Specimens featuring contestants from the 2009 World Beard & Moustache Competition. Photographed in 2009 in Anchorage, Alaska the series captures the follicular wonder of some of the world’s most unusual and impressive beards and the men who sport them.
The series has toured the world and been featured in the New York Times, and can now be seen at the Land Gallery in Portland, OR. This 2011 wall calendar features some of the series’ best. Available online here.
